Minimal makeup but make it clean

I love the clean beauty movement. Better ingredients and more transparency are a step in the right direction.

But as a professional organizer, I’ve seen how quickly it can turn into yet another form of clutter.

People replace products they already own, chase the latest “clean” launch, and end up with drawers full of barely used bottles.

Clean beauty doesn’t have to mean buying more.

Often, the most thoughtful routine is simply less but better.

Here are six ways to approach clean beauty more consciously.

1. Finish Before You Replace

One of the easiest ways to avoid beauty clutter is to finish what you already own before buying something new.

The clean beauty trend has encouraged many people to replace perfectly good products in the name of “better ingredients.” But constant upgrading often creates more waste, not less.

When you finish products fully before replacing them, you naturally become more thoughtful about what actually deserves a place in your routine.

2. Stick to a Few Trusted Brands

A simple routine often comes from consistency.

Instead of constantly experimenting with new products, many people find it easier to choose one or two brands they trust and build a routine around them.

Some brands even design streamlined routines intended to be completed in just a few minutes. Starting with a simplified system and adjusting gradually can be much easier than managing dozens of products.

My favorite clean beauty brands? I love Merit, Ilia, and Saie for Makeup and Oak Essentials for supple, sustainable skincare.

3. Use Up Your Samples

Samples are meant to be used, not stored.

Many of us collect samples from beauty counters, online orders, or subscription boxes and then forget about them entirely. Using samples first can help you discover what works before committing to full-size products.

It’s also one of the simplest ways to prevent unnecessary purchases.

4. Cross-Check Ingredients

“Clean” doesn’t have a single regulated definition in the beauty industry, which means labels can sometimes be misleading.

If you’re curious about ingredients, some tools can help. Some dermatologists and estheticians offer apps that allow consumers to check whether ingredients may be comedogenic or problematic for certain skin types.

Taking a moment to research ingredients can often be more helpful than relying on marketing claims alone. My friend and Esthetician Biba has her own pore clogger checker.

5. Edit Your Expired Products

Just like a closet or kitchen, beauty products need regular editing.

Many clean beauty formulas contain fewer preservatives, which means they can expire faster. When products sit untouched in drawers for years, they can degrade or grow bacteria.

If something has expired or hasn’t been used in months, it may be time to let it go. A streamlined routine works best when every product in it is something you actually use.

6. Look for Transparency, Not Buzzwords

Consumers are becoming more aware that words like clean, natural, and green are often used loosely in marketing.

Regulators in Europe and the UK have introduced guidance around environmental claims to reduce misleading sustainability messaging and greenwashing in industries including beauty.

At the same time, beauty brands are navigating increasingly complex digital marketplaces where product messaging must be clear and compliant. Since I often work with influencers, I was happy to find out that some companies partner with specialists, including a full-service Amazon agency for beauty, to help manage their online presence while ensuring product information and claims are communicated responsibly.

The Bottom Line

Clean beauty doesn’t have to mean buying more products.

Sometimes the most sustainable routine is simply one that is intentional, edited regularly, and built around a few products that truly work for you. For more Clean Beauty Without the Clutter ideas, check out 15 Things to Let Go of Now: Bath and Beauty Edition.

In a world of endless product launches, choosing fewer things and choosing them thoughtfully might be the cleanest beauty trend of all.
