A simple checklist for how to choose the right blinds, shades, or curtains for your space
If I had a dollar for every time I walked into a client’s home and they said, “I wish I had done something different with the windows”…
It happens all the time.
Not because people make bad choices.
Because they make decisions before they really know what they need.
By the time they realize they wanted more privacy, softer light, or better sleep, they are already living with something that does not quite work.
And window coverings are not something you casually redo.
They are one of those decisions you feel every day.
A quick note on where I’m coming from
I am not an interior designer.
But before I started my organizing business, I spent a decade designing film sets. I have a master’s degree in design, and I’ve spent years thinking about how a space reads, how it functions, and how it makes people feel.
Now, through organizing, I see the other side of it.
People assume the issue is clutter. And sometimes it is. But just as often, the space itself is working against them.
The light is too harsh.
There is no privacy.
The room never quite settles.
And window coverings are one of the most overlooked pieces of that.
I have absolutely walked into homes and suggested we take something down entirely because it was not supporting how the space was meant to feel.
Start here instead
Before you look at blinds, curtains, or shades, pause for a second.
Ask yourself:
How do I actually want this space to feel?
Not how you want it to look.
How you want to live in it?
Calm
Soft
Private
Restful
Open to the outside
Because once you have that answer, everything else becomes much easier to filter.

A quick real-life example
I just moved into a studio space in Studio City that is surrounded by trees, which I love.
At the same time, there is a traffic way right in front, so I needed privacy.
I also did not want to block everything out and feel like I was working inside a tunnel.
There are five windows in a pretty small entry area, so the light really defines the whole space.
I ended up using lighter curtains across three windows to soften things and create privacy without losing that connection to the outside. In another spot, I chose a top-down shade so I can still see the trees during the day and close it off more at night.
Nothing about those choices was random.
It all came back to how I wanted the space to feel while I was in it.
Ask these questions before you buy blinds, shades, or curtains
If you are trying to figure out what window coverings to get, this is where I would start:
- What do I want this room to feel like during the day?
Bright and energizing or soft and calm? - When do I actually use this space?
Morning light and afternoon glare are completely different experiences. - Do I want full privacy or just a little separation?
- Do I need this room to be dark at night?
If yes, blackout matters more than you think. - Am I trying to simplify the look of the room?
One good solution can replace a lot of layering. - How do I react to light?
Some people are fine with it. Some people feel overstimulated quickly. - Is this room too hot or too cold?
Window coverings can help more than you expect. - Do I want to see outside during the day?
Or do I actually want to close things off? - Do I care about materials or sustainability?
- Will this make my life easier every day?
If you can answer these, you will make a much better decision than just picking something that looks good online.
Where this actually matters
Window coverings are one of those things that are easy to underestimate.
But they control light, privacy, and how comfortable a space feels.
When they are right, you do not think about them.
When they are wrong, you feel it constantly.
If you are exploring options, this is a helpful breakdown of how blackout blinds work and when they make sense.
And if you want to see a range of options depending on your needs, Ecoline blinds for windows are an excellent resource.
The way I think about it
You are not just choosing window coverings.
You are choosing how your space supports you.
How you wake up
How you wind down
How private or open you feel
How the light moves through your day
That is why it is worth slowing down for a minute and asking the right questions first.
Because once you do, the right choice is usually pretty obvious.
