Why Decluttering Your Bathroom Matters

Let’s be real: life gets chaotic. Whether it’s a chorus of afternoon guitar lessons, a stir-crazy pup, or an avalanche of dishes, your bathroom might just be the unsung hero of your home—a tiny, sacred escape. Around here, we’ve even given that sanctuary a hashtag: #getcalm with 15 things to toss today.

At Simply Spaced, we believe your bath and beauty spaces should support your well-being, not add to the stress. A little intention goes a long way—think: soft towels, a fresh candle, a splash of greenery. But here’s the truth: no amount of aesthetic can outshine the power of a good declutter.

So where to begin? Start with letting go.

The List: 15 Things to Toss Today

  1. Expired or toxic products If it’s past its prime or full of mystery ingredients, it’s time to say goodbye.
  2. Expired medicines and prescriptions
Keep your cabinet safe and functional. Dispose responsibly.

  3. Products you’ll try “someday”
If “someday” hasn’t shown up in the last year, it’s not coming.

  4. Products you tried and don’t like
Guilt has no place in your self-care routine. Pass it on or toss it out.

  5. Bath gifts you wish you never received
Not your scent, not your vibe? You’re not obligated to keep it.

  6. Old or broken beauty appliances
If it doesn’t work or never really did, it’s just taking up space.

  7. Stained and ripped towels
You deserve towels that feel (and look) good. Retire the rest.

  8. Moldy shower curtain
It’s not you, it’s mildew. Upgrade your curtain—your health will thank you.

  9. Old and smelly loofahs
Bacteria hotels. Time for a clean slate. Try replacing a bacteria hotel with a longer lasting silicone option.

  10. Used candles
If it won’t light, if it’s part of a candle graveyard, or smells like dust, let it go. Pro Tip: Create a candle zone in your home where special candles live when out of use.

  11. Excess packaging
Free up drawer space and ditch the bulk. Your products already made it home. We love to remove extra packaging when possible to save space and simplify.

  12. Sample surplus
If you haven’t used that sample serum by now, it’s not happening. How old is it anyway?

  13. Single-use disposable products
Trade in the waste for something sustainable. Your planet (and shower) will thank you. Pro Tip: Swap disposable cotton balls with reusable rounds.

  14. Toxic and expired cleaning supplies
Keep it clean, not chemical-heavy. Swap for safer options when possible.

  15. Self-doubt
Because the best thing you can let go of in any room? The inner critic. You’re doing better than you think.

Let this list be your permission slip. Your bathroom doesn’t need to be perfect—it just needs to be sanctuary to support a calm mind, a moment of peace and some well earned serenity.

Final thought, it’s not always just about what you let go that matters. Sometimes it’s about what you intentionally add.

As you declutter outdated bath and beauty products, consider replacing them with experiences that promote long-term wellness. One transformative upgrade is adding a home sauna. Christoffer Arfert of Select Saunas explains, “A personal sauna encourages you to prioritize relaxation and skin health in your routine, replacing clutter with a calming, rejuvenating ritual.” Let go of the excess, and make space for wellness-focused living. One of my favorite investments that’s more than a one off dopamine hit.
