Headspace at Home: how to create more of it

Meditation, being out in nature, and exercising are great techniques for clearing your mind.  But I also believe your home – the place you likely spend quite a bit of time in – plays a role in how clear-headed you feel. Here are some of my favorite tips to clear your mind through your home.
.
1.
DECLUTTER
.
You’ve probably heard it time and time again but I have to say it because it works and it is so darn true! When you de-clutter your surroundings, you’ll immediately feel lighter.  This can mean anything from a major closet cleanout or a smaller project like rearranging the coffee table or a bookshelf. Another tip? If you have a stack of books/magazines/papers you’ve been meaning to read for quite some time and haven’t yet, I strongly suggest reassessing which items you truly want to get through. This is because every time you see that pile it just reminds you of something you haven’t done yet and can cause even more stress. Lighten your load and you’ll instantly feel more clear-headed! Most things are available online, anyway.

2. CREATE & INDULGE
.
Once you’ve de-cluttered, you’ll want to create an experience around the things that you enjoy doing… and/or carve out a serene space meant just for relaxing! This is where I suggest indulging in little things that will make you feel happy when you use or look at them. If you’re a writer, this could be a nice pen or notebook. If you love to cook, this could be a special olive oil. The possibilities are endless! Some other examples include fresh cut flowers, a nice throw to relax in, or a yummy smelling candle (I must admit, I have and regularly use all three).  I also have a beautiful chandelier lamp in my home that I absolutely love – it shimmers in the sunlight and casts cool dancing shadows on my walls when it’s being used.  It’s the little touches like these that help you feel at ease and calm in your surroundings.
.
3.
DETOXIFY
.
You know the feeling when you walk inside somewhere and the air is just stale? Definitely not a great feeling and probably not one that you want for your home. I love the feeling of fresh air and (luckily!) there’s a simple, and free, solution for experiencing that fresh air feeling in your home – just open your windows and let it in! If you’re looking for a more holistic and spiritual option to detoxify and cleanse your home, check out the concept of saging, a principal in Native American cultures and traditions to cleanse a person, place or an object. If you decide to go this route, you can find inexpensive sage sticks online (like here).

.

So there you go. There are some of my favorite ways to clear your mind through your home. I’m always on the lookout for new ideas, so if you have any other suggestions on this topic, I’d love to hear them. Don’t be shy! Feel free to comment below or email me to get in touch.
