Before recording the episode, we wanted to show Julie how our three-pronged method [SIMPLIFY, STREAMLINE, STYLE] works, so we put it to work in her guest bedroom, home office closet combo. The results speak for themselves.

Organizing a multi-purpose space was a fantastic canvas for the conversation because in today’s online world, so many people work from home and need to master the multi-use space. Over the course of a day, we took her no-system closet and created an organized, functional space for all the equipment and supplies she needs for her business.

TIP 1: MAXIMIZE STORAGE
For this space, we started by thinking through how to maximize the closet storage so that Julie had plenty of room for all her office supplies. Our priority was to use as much of the closet space to hold both items for her work and for her guests.
We opted for an Elfa closet system from The Container Store for a quick, affordable option. Our priority was to maximize vertical space, and bring in shelves and drawers for all the office supplies that were floating around the no-system closet.

TIP 2: DESIGNATE LANDING SPOTS
If you’re working with a multi-use space, you may need unique landing spots. For Julie, it was important to have landing spots for gifted cosmetics to be tested and shot. We carved out three drawers for product to make the entire process that much easier. We also created a “to do” drawer for any item that needed to be addressed, such as a CD to be digitized, poster to be framed, and notebook to be transcribed.
Consider what landing spots you need in your multi-purpose space. For instance, in a wardrobe/vanity space, you may need a keepsake box for any new notes from hubby or ticket stubs that you pull out of your purse. For your kitchen/mail station, you may decide to set up a filer for outgoing items to send to school with the kids. Simply look around your space, and consider what types of items seem to float around the space. Chances are a drawer, tray or bin will help create order and clarity.

TIP 3: ADD PERSONAL TOUCHES
You don’t need to spend a ton of money to up-level the style of your space. For Julie, we used what she already had to add personal touches to the closet. A repurposed whiteboard, Polaroid camera, and podcast microphone were all we needed to make the space feel unique.
We talk a lot about style at home with our clients, and the truth is adding style is way less complicated than people make it out to be. For us, less is always more. We recommend noting a few items that make you smile, and putting them on display.
