As the holidays draw near, there’s something magical about coming home to the place where so many childhood memories come to life. This year, I’m embracing that nostalgia while tackling a project that’s been calling my name: revamping the orange sunroom in my dad’s 135-year-old Dutch Colonial. I’m transforming a summery sunroom into a cozy Cabincore haven.
Armed with vision for a Cabincore aesthetic here in the mountains of New Jersey, I’ve got my Pinterest inspiration, and my Milanote Moodboard to organize my vision. I’m turning this often-overlooked space into a cozy retreat while I help them declutter and reset the rest of the house. Bring on the cocoa.
Finding the Vision
I started with Pinterest, my go-to source for sparking creativity. By searching for keywords like “Cabincore,” “cozy sunroom,” and “rustic holiday décor,” I unearthed a trove of images that spoke to me: warm, earthy tones; inviting textures; and a timeless charm. Next, I turned to Milanote, my most used visioning tool that I use for moodboarding, planing, brand building, and more for visually piecing everything together. I landed on this vibe that combines colors, textures, and top design elements, to see how my ideas would come to life in harmony.
Crafting the Cabincore Aesthetic
Cabincore is all about blending rustic charm with cozy, welcoming vibes. Here’s the blueprint I’m following to reimagine this space:
1. Colors to Turn a Summery Sunroom into a Cozy Cabin:
The sunroom’s orange tones inspired a palette of complementary shades:
- Mustard
- Terracotta
- Sage
- Sunset
- Rust
- Olive
These earthy hues bring a warm, grounded feeling to the room.
2. Patterns to Turn a Summery Sunroom into a Cozy Cabin:
To balance the rustic elements, I’m introducing patterns with a touch of softness and femininity:
- Plaid evokes the timeless feel of flannels and cozy blankets.
- Florals and botanicals add a delicate contrast.
3. Textures to Turn a Summery Sunroom into a Cozy Cabin:
Layering textures is essential for creating that “sink-in” coziness:
- Natural fibers like wool for socks, throws and Pendleton blankets
- Reclaimed wood for furniture and shelving
- Worn leather for an inviting, lived-in feel
- Cotton and sheepskin for added softness
4. Key Elements to Turn a Summery Sunroom into a Cozy Cabin:
The Cabincore aesthetic thrives on curated objects that tell a story:
- Pendleton blankets to drape over chairs or use as statement pieces
- Stacks of old books for charm and a literary vibe
- A cozy corner for coffee and cocoa moments
- Weathered boots and flannels for authentic detail
- An old trunk repurposed as a coffee table or storage
5. Lighting to Turn a Summery Sunroom into a Cozy Cabin:
Lighting sets the mood:
- Soft, diffused light from table lamps
- Oil lamps for vintage flair
- A “faux” electric fireplace to mimic the glow of a crackling fire
5. Smells to Turn a Summery Sunroom into a Cozy Cabin:
- Candles
- Cinnamon Rolls
- Pine
- Stumptown Coffee
Creating the Space
I’m starting by decluttering and deep-cleaning the room (essential when working in a home with over a century of history!). From here, I’m beginning to research and curate key items like bed to replace a temporary blow up mattress and each element of my moodboard will find its place, layered thoughtfully to evoke comfort and connection.
This project is more than just a room makeover; it’s a way to weave new memories into the fabric of an old home. As I sip my cocoa and take in the warm glow of my sunroom retreat, I’ll know that every detail—each color, texture, and light—has been chosen with intention. Stay tuned for the turn up. I’m thinking of a “Cozy after Christmas” them forr the final reveal.
